Bedsheets For Backgrounds?
TomHeaven wrote:.

Can bedsheets be used to make decent backgrounds?.

Not really. They sag and show wrinkles. Background paper is relatively cheap. I bought a couple of rolls different colors years ago and I still use them when I want something on a plain background...

If you have nothing else you could use them if you use a wide aperture to keep them out of the depth of field.Tom.

Not only is the wrinkles an issue but because they are often very white and the subject matter can many differnent colors I had trouble getting good skin tone and color matching on some christmas pictures I tried with my D80...

You sure can use sheets as a background, and it works very well. I often use white. I take the picture with the subject standing in front of the sheet using a flash. You have to watch out for shadow. If you are centered with subject and up high and point the camera somewhat down on the subject you won't see a shadow..

I place the picture in picture editing softeware and outline the sheet using the freehand tool in microsoft digital imaging, or other digital software. I use the brightening, contrast and hue tool features. I can edit out wrinkles in the sheet so the sheet looks perfectly smooth, and sometmes make the sheet bright white, or grey using hue..

If you experment a little you will be amazed at how good it will look. it will look very professional. I have had people pay me $80 for an 8 x10 portrait doing the picture with a sheet in the background...

I've tried many home-made backgrounds over the years including bed sheets and various other thin fabrics. They work ok if you stretch them over a frame but if you just hang them they are not so good. But what sort of photography do you want to use this for?..

Would that be a problem if the subject was darkly complected? Or if a black or dark colored sheet was used with a lightly complected person?.

I had in mind to try a big white cotton sheet I had. I also have a big black satin sheet. I wonder if that will work well? It's shiny so I think that will be a problem..

I can't try the background stand yet as it is defective and B&H is closed today so I have to wait until tomorrow at the earliest to resolve the problem...

Ok. Should work if you attach a batten to the bottom edge of the sheet and roll it round a few times to take up any slack. And as has already been said, make sure it's out of focus...
