battery question
How do off brand batteries compare to OEM? My Canon batteries are on back order, and I'm getting impatient.....

I've been using 4 of those cheap ebay batteries for my various cameras. They are just as good as Canon's. Last about as long, and haven't failed in the last 4-5 years of heavy usage. Strongly recommended. No point getting ripped off by Canon, unless you have no other choices...

Yep. I use replacement batteries for all my cameras and they're all fine. Nothing to be afraid of. I get mine from Sterlingtek who also give good service.Androohttp://Androo.smugmug.com..

To give the scary bit first all li-ion/lithium polymer batteries need a built in circuit breaker to stop them overheating and worst case scenarion catching fire. You will recall Dell & Sony both had battery recalls for this reason..

For the above reason I would be reluctant to buy really cheap no name batteries from Ebay but generic batteries from an online or high street traders seem a sensible purchase to me. If they fry your camera you sue the retailer and/or the battery manufacturer!.

I am sure some Ebay retailers will be OK but how do you chose? How do you8 find tyhem if you need to sue them?Chris Elliott.

All batteries are made by a VERY small group of factories. Only the outer package is different. And as someone mentioned, some batteries have protective devices inside and/or electronics to monitor the state of charge..

The problem how do you know if the factory includes the protective devices. For my D70, I bought 2 "Energizer" branded batteries for half the cost of Nikon.I would NOT buy $5 batteries from ebay.

I've been using SterlingTek batteries for a few years now. One of them did stop taking a charge at all, but I will still use them - still cheaper than the Canon versions..

I have been using a sterlingtek generic for my Rebel XT and zero problems with it, still outlasts my original canon one everytime and for under $20 I can not complain..

Bought a new D80 kit was advised original battery only lasts for 30min (basically just to "play" with the new camera). Pursuaded to upgrade to a 4hr battery...was I duped for $79?..

Modern camera, and lap top batteries are very complex things, and use some very strange components, I would not use none approved batteries as I have seen tests done on these, and they do go off like fire bombs, and cannot be put out, even some pucker batteries have been re-called faulty.put a search in google " lap top battery explodes ".

To answer your question the standard D80 battery supplied with the camera will last for something like 1000 shots. And if you do not shoot with it but just leave it on it will last for weeks so - Yes I am afraid you have been duped. It sounds like you are buying from a "bate and switch" New Jersey supplier. If you can do cancel the order and make sure you cancel the transaction with your credit card company..

Do a search and you'll find a guy who tests batteries and rips them apart to look at the insides, CPU's and so on. You'll have to dig deep to find it but once there, it's an eyeopener. I'd give you the website if I could but it was pre-crash and not on my back-up copy of "Favourites"..

Anyway, if it will help he like the UniRoss replacements and I've bought some for my Lieca and Olympus and have no complaints at all..

And I saved a fortune: I mean 68 for a battery when UniRoss do it for 15....

Regards, David..

Yes, I'm sorry to say you were duped. It is a complete lie to say that the original battery "only lasts for 30 minutes"..

On the bright side, you now have two batteries for your camera, and that's not a bad thing..

...I defer to others who have had good experiences..

Where I live, a 3rd party battery for the D80 (bought from a bricks and mortar store) is only about 10% cheaper than the genuine Nikon. Not worth the risk as far as I'm concerned, especially given the complexity of the battery circuitry etc..

I can understand being tempted by a battery that is significantly cheaper, and it may well be just as good - but on the other hand, shrug, it's a one-off purchase that will last for years, it's not like you're buying new batteries all the time so the saving isn't that great really..

I'd say it's one thing to buy a well known brand of battery from a bricks and mortar store where the staff can give you personal experience, and where you can front them face to face if you have a problem - but buying a no-name on eBay or similar is just asking for trouble..
