Autofocus ability; practical difference?
When it comes to autofocus abilities, what are the practical setbacks of a lower value.. For instanceThe Nikon D40x autofocus = 5-area auto focus,Canon EOS400D autofocus = 9-point.

Shutter speeds of both 1/4000 sec.

Does autofocus affect on moving targets; I wont be photographing race cars passing by me at incredible speeds or anything like that but general movement like people running about playing football or birds in flight..

Between the above mentioned cameras, what will be the real difference in focusing?..

In the real world... no. Not enough to worry about..

That applies to most things photographic these days... not just focus points..

The number of focus points makes no practical difference for most day to day situations. My Pentax body has 11 focus points and most of the time I find myself keeping the camera set on the center point focus only, then locking the exposure and focus and recomposing the scene to shoot..

Continuous autofocus is usually a selection available on all DSLR bodies. On entry level bodies it is not as quick as the higher end bodies but should serve you well to start.....you may never find a need for anything quicker unless you do get into photographing motor sports seriously.

It refers to the number of AF points (AF sensors) that each camera has. The AF points determine the focus distance to set for the lens. The more AF points, the easier it is to place at least one AF point over your intended subject without having to recompose your photo...

With portrait shots it is usual to use a large aperture (low number) which will render the background out of focus. with such shots it is critical to get the focus in the right place or e.g parts of the head might be out of focus. It is usual in such circumstances to focus on the eyes. If you are able to do this comfortably in PORTRAIT mode with your prefered cam you are unlikely to need more..

People often "focus & re-compose" if they do not have focus point in the right place in thre VF on the scene as they want to shoot it. I am not agreat fan of focus and recompose. We all had to do it in the past because there was only one AF point but now we have many..

I have bookmarked a couple of links on the subject but cannot find them now. Will post when I locate them.-Chris Elliott.

More points will definitely help when tracking and using AI Servo mode, particularly if you're not filling the frame with the subject..

And don't discount as well that each of the focus points of the Canon 40D are cross type sensors that provide higher precision than a regular horizontal sensitive only sensor. Even with slower glass...
