Auto Contrast?
How does Auto Contrast work? Does it shift the histogram so that the average level of lighting in the photo ends up centered in the histogram?.

Do you use Auto Contrast?.

Although I've never used it on a camera, I suspect it will operate in a similar fashion to photoshop which will do what you mentioned, correct the histogram to the required range. Personally, I think it would be better to leave this work to photoshop, in case you want more control over the final image.Duncan Bristowhttp://www.pbase.com/duncanbristow..

Thanks for confirming how auto contrast works, Duncan. I don't have auto contrast in the camera. I have it in Picasa..

Al Nikon DSLRs have auto contrast as an option. On the D80 it is the default option. It seeks to match the contrast setting to the dynamic range of your shot. It appears to do quite a good job and thenfacilty to change it is buried in a menu. Without it maybe dynamic range would exceed the contrast available and lead to blown highlights..

I don't think "shift". I would say "extend" the width of the histogram so that is fills the width of the histogram..

I use auto everything most of the time and auto contrast when I don't want Picasa to interfere with WB.

Hmm, extending to fill the histogram, that's quite a different thing than just centerig on the histogram. It makes sense though. Maybe it does both?.

Interesting that you use it most of the time. I've been trying to avoid using it because it screws up EXIF data, but it literally transforms some images, so I often use it then reverse it if the effect is subtle..

I would expect it to extend the "mountain" of the histogram so that it covers more of the width with less steep sides and generally turns it into a very wide plateau by adding additional tonal ramps so as to extend the total tonal range of an image. That is what it does with Capture NX. I never use it with shots that are already too contrasty but I imagine it will try to reduce contrast by taking tonal ramps away..
