Are there any cameras that are waterproof and have a good zoom?
Hi,.

I was wondering if anyone here can recommend a camera for my partner....I use an Olympus 7070 and he uses my old Ricoh Caplio R7 (? can't remember the model number, one of those flat horizontal ones) whose screen doesn't work anymore..

We go hiking quite a bit and are planning a long trip with lots of hiking in New Zealand....

Would like to get him something (not necessarily new) that is (in order of importance):.

- waterproof, or pretty close to, as mine isn't so that would be handy!.

- has a good optical zoom, more than 3x (which is all mine has).

- fairly easy to use (but if also avail, of course room to grow would be good - ie. manual aperture & shutter speed settings, but don't want to spend too much).

- good battery life, maybe just running on normal AA's/rechargables.

- fairly compact and not too heavy.

I probably want to spend less than $600, I don't really know what's available, any suggestions would be appreciated even if over that amount.....

Hope someone can help,.

Jodie..

If he'll be using it primarily for landscape-type photo's, you might look for a model with a real wide angle lens, like 28mm equivalent..

Also, restricting your choices to waterproof models might exclude a lot of the best cameras...

Jodie...I'm new around here, but I've read the the new oly e3 is very rugged and water resistant, don't know if you want to spend that much, lol...

Yeah, probably don't want to spend that much, and that might be too much for him to handle. He is very much a beginner, he only P+S's at the moment..

I knew it would be limiting the options a bit, just thought I'd ask in case anyone knew of one that fitted everything on my list!..

All of the cameras I have seen that are designed to be waterproof without an external housing have limited zoom and rather poor image quality. They also use proprietary batteries, no optical viewfinder and lack manual control..

Many of the smaller point and shoot cameras meet your other requirements but would require a housing to be waterproof. You might consider something like the Canon A720 and use it in an Aquapac bag when you need it to be waterproof..

Steves-digicams.com has a review section just for waterproof cameras. Check them out...

Waterproof is a rather vague concept....

Shoudl it stand a rain shower or do you want to go diving with it?.

Have a look at the pentax W-series and the olympus with the "SW" at the end of the name ( for compacts). But they all do not have areal wideangle..

For dSLR: Olympus e1/e1, Pentax k10D, Nikon D200 but there the splash proof lenses getting seriously expensive.....

Thanks for those suggestions, I'll have a look. Don't want to go as far as a dSLR tho. I don't really want to be able to dive with it, mainly just for rain when hiking.....
