APS-C Pixel Ratio
After having reviewed the specs of digicams and DSLR's, I am curious about the pixel ratio of the sensors. In any 4/3 system, the pixel ratio is exactly 4 to 3. 1024 X 768 or 1600 X 1200, etc..

However, the 3/2 systems are not exactly 3/2. They are 3002 X 2000 or even 3008 X 2000. Where do those silly extra pixels come from?.

From rows of pixels, of course..

Many 3:2 DSLRs are exactly 3:2..

Yeah, I know  ... BUT .... why haven't I ever seen an 4/3 sensor resolutions like 1607 X 1200. Just wondering..

The specs show the actual pixel count and then the effective pixel count. Of course they are photosites, not pixels. Only display devices have pixels. And prints have dots. Not that I'm trying to be the semantics police or anything. ..

Hey, somebody has to do it! When I do it (be the pixel vs photosite cop) people gripe at me. So, I appreciate you taking the heat..

But most display devices don't have pixels either...they have dots. .

However, all this is off topic. I agree with Ralph, but think the important question is not how they get the "extra" rows, but rather WHY? Don't they have control of how the sensor is built???.

Why did Nikon let Sony build the sensor for the D300 with 16 extra rows? And why did Nikon build their own sensor for the D3 with 8 extra rows? Those are the questions....

Actually, according The Global Conspiracy Theory they didn't get extra rows, they were shorted columns...
