Another newbie question...
Apologies for asking this question when so many people have asked it before me, but I'm looking for a P&S camera to buy as a Xmas present for my mum..

Budget it rather low - I'm looking to spend 100 at the very most..

It needs to be able to take good photos in some sort of "easy mode". My parents aren't the kind of people who like to mess around with white balance/aperture speeds/ISO never mind anything more complicated than that! I guess some kind of modes already programmed into the camera for different conditions would be useful..

She'll be using it mainly for holidays snaps and photos of the grandkids indoors at special occasions such as Xmas/Easter/birthdays..

It needs to be pretty compact ie small enough to fit in my dad's trouser pocket, but doesn't need to be ridiculously ultra-compact!.

Many thanks in advance for all your help!..

A suggestion. Why not use the Subject line to give people a clue as to what question you are asking..

Go for one of the Canons. A460, A550, A560 They are all good basic cameras.Buy online for the best prices, about 70, 90 and 100 if memory serves..

Thanks Simon. I've seen the A560 and it looks like a nice camera. Do you know what the major differences are between the A560 and the A570IS? Is it just the image stabilisation or is there anything else that would make a difference to a "snap-shot" photographer?.

Thanks again..

I'll second that, except for the A4xx series. The A560 or A570IS are what I'd recommend...

570IS has manual modes too, while 560 does not. For a P&S use - No real difference..

Also, if your budget is more like 70, look at the Nikon L11. It offers better movie modes than the similar priced Canon A460. I don't have personal experience with it, though...

Ajay, thanks for the info on the difference between the two. I don't believe my parents would ever use any manual modes so I think I'll probably go for the A560..

Greg, thank you also for you opinion. I can get the A560 for about 90 on Amazon at the moment which I'm happy enough to pay if it's more suitable/better IQ than the Nikon L11. They very rarely use movie mode to be honest, only when my dad decides to film himself goofing around in front of the camera!.

One last thing. A friend of mine bought their Mum the Casio EX-Z75 which she seems happy with, but would you say that in your opinion the A560 is a "better" camera?.

Thanks very much for your help...

It depends. Casio's are known to be fast in shutter response, and flash recycle. The size will also be smaller..

IQ wise Canon 560 will be better due to better lens & image processing. Low light images will also be better..
