Advice on taking photos of kids
Hi all,.

I'd like any advice on taking photo's of kids. It seems every picture I take has a blurred part on the photo. I'm trying to catch my 16 month son in a photo when hes dancing etc.. The camera's I'm using are P&S Canon Ixus 800IS and DSLR Canon D40 17-85 is usm lens..

At present most of my photos have blurred hands with everything else ok..

All comments welcome..

That sounds like the shutter speed is too slow for your subject. The IS will take care of camera shake, but it does nothing for subject movement. You need to use a faster shutter speed. On the p&s you probably should use sports mode, and on the DSLR consider using shutter priority mode. Unless you are photographing in bright sun, using a faster shutter speed requires more light, which means either:.

1) You need to bump up the ISO and deal with the noise in post processing (the DSLR is much better at this than the p&s);.

2) You need to use a flash to freeze the action (and if you don't have an external flash, probably deal with the resultant red-eye in post processing);.

3) Get a faster lens on the DSLR (however a faster lens has a smaller depth of field when you use the faster aperture, which means not all of your subject might be in focus); or4) Just tolerate the blurryness of hands, since it shows subject movement...

Take it simple like this: For indoor shots use a fast lens, eg a 50mm f1.8 or 1.4. The Canon 50mm f1.8 is less than 100 Euros. I have recommended it to my friend who didn't use his 350D+kit lens for one year. Now he is very satisfied .

Best Regards.

The p&s will have a lot of shutter lag but you should be able to get the photo with the 40d. I have the same lens on a 20d and it is fairly slow ie you need flash and/or high ISO setting for indoor action. when in doubt put it on green square mode...

I've tried all modes all especially the sport mode but I guess the little guy is just to fast lol. Probably searching for perfection..

If you can, post a photo. That will make it easier for us to offer help..

Or bump the ISO to 1600 or even 3200 and use Av mode and set the lens as wide as it will go..

If you don't understand how to do these things, please take the time to read the manual and some information on exposure..
