WTF... 80K$s Per Song... THE WAREZ INDUSTRY MUST BE IN SHOCK.....

Fair's fair - she had the chance to pay a very small settlement for breaking the law, and instead her ego (I assume) led her to this result.

I do think the music industry is kind of crap (expensive, licensing is over-the-top, the big labels take a hung chunk of an artists' royalties etc), although this result was inevitable.

The RIAA have even said she *still* has the option to settle for the $3k-$5k 'normal' settlements...

Wow, I was shocked when I heard this on the news now reading more about it. Shocking price... so simple... dont do it..

I don't support illegal downloading, however I think American law needs to be revamped for the 21st century when it comes to IP law. Here in Canada, the max you'll face if you get caught is $500 per song more than enough that I doubt you'd ever consider doing it again afterwards, however a reasonable enough amount that it won't likely ruin anyone's life unless they were dumb enough to do this with hundreds/thousands of songs in which case I fully support the consequences...

Craziness read this at work while downloading illegal song JK...

They just want to make an example out of her just as they did to the grandmother whos grand-daughter who downloaded music I think she was like 7 years old... she was on a few commercials saying please buy the music so you don't get in the mess I am in... 80k for one song....

I totally agree.

Paying 500$ is more than enough...

I would prefer jail if there was someone standing on my head asking for 80 grands....

Most IP lawsuits are against companies though where this type of award would have been acceptable. Overall US law is overwhelming. We are a nation of laws and are burdened under their own weight. I doubt most lawyers know even 1% of the existing laws in their own city...

Yep. Take a look at this for something even more ridiculous: Parking in own driveway? Here"s a ticket - Weird news- msnbc.com.

Some people need to get their head examined. At least a little common sense ought to be used...

This is getting ridiculous, Laws need to be changed for this purpose, I rather get an Dail up internet because it is more safer than the DSL for the IP Purposes..

Yes it is the law and usually they do not enforce it. It is their drive way and it is unpaved so that is why they got tickets. Last month on our street they came by and ticketed a lot of cars because the RIGHT tires were not to the CURB. Yes it is the law but they have never enforced it in a neighborhood. I am assuming they have a party to pay for so why not ticket 100 cars and pay for it. If they sent donation cards that would of been a better deal instead of having it forced down my throat...

It's $500 and the RCMP is no longer actively pursuing people downloading for personal use...

Actually in canada it is legal to have music downloaded onto removable storage (i.e. harddrive internal/external) but not legal to have it on a music playing medium with permanent storage (i.e. burned to a CD or ipod).

Also legal for criticism/review, and a few other situations where I can't remember.

Canada's on the USA's top list of countries with poor copyright protection laws.

Russia, spain, and china are the worst, and in Spain, ISPs use the fact that spain gives no shit about illegal downloading to sell their service.

Just did a paper on this for a law class....
